Make checking the routine

Feel the mix below the surface instead of judging only its color. For a small movable pot, compare its weight after draining with its weight before the next watering. Illinois Extension recommends daily checks; the check does not mean that every pot needs water every day.

Keep newly sown seedbeds appropriately moist while seeds germinate. An established plant and a tray of germinating seeds require different attention. Consult the crop instructions rather than applying one drying rule to every stage.

Water the root area thoroughly

For ordinary draining containers, apply water slowly to the mix until some exits the base. Maryland Extension advises thorough watering rather than repeated shallow splashes. Let excess water escape and empty a saucer that would keep the pot standing in it.

Check that the center of the root zone has actually become moist. Water racing through a gap beside shrunken dry mix can look like successful drainage while leaving roots dry. Rewet gradually and reassess.

Adjust when conditions change

As plants grow, they can use water faster. Hot weather, wind, and porous pots also change the pace of drying. A container under an overhang may receive little useful rain even after a storm.

Check again during unusually hot or windy periods. If you repeatedly miss the window before severe drying, reconsider pot size, location, or an appropriate irrigation system. Do not compensate with a permanently waterlogged saucer.

Make a plan for days away

Write instructions for each group of pots rather than simply asking someone to 'water everything.' Show the helper how you check the mix and where runoff should go.

If using drip irrigation or a reservoir planter, test it while you are home. Inspect individual containers after a full cycle. Automation changes who opens the water supply; it does not remove the need to verify that plants receive it.

When leaves wilt despite wet mix, pause before adding more water. Record the symptoms and seek a diagnosis if they persist, because wilting alone does not identify its cause.
